Two way light switch connection and applications

In this article, we are going to show you two way light switch. A 2-way switching means you can control operate appliances like bulb water pump etc by using two switches at different locations, generally used to control water pump from different stories of a house. The 2-way switch can be ON/OFF from any of both switches independently. Spouse your water pump is on from ground story you can turn off it from 2end story and vise versa.

Construction of two way light switch

Typically there are two different methods of making a two way light switch. The 1st one is 2-wire control and another one is 3-wire control. We are going to explain both the methods in the tutorial with pics as well as through the video.

  • AC supply 110v/220v

In this method, two wires are connected between both switches, it is the old method. Connections are shown in the diagram given below.

2-way Switch Wiring using Two-wire control

As you see in the circuit diagram of the 2-way switch circuit above, you see that the phase is connected with the common of the 1st switch. PIN no1 and PIN no2 of the first two-way switch are connected with the PIN1 and PIN2 of the second switch. The bulb is connected with the Common pin of the 2nd switches and the other end of the saver is connected with the Neutral line. Working on two-way switching is given in the table given below. This configuration of this circuit is similar to the EX-NOR gate in digital electronics.

2-way Switch Wiring using Three-wire control

This method is commonly used nowadays as it is efficient than the Two-Wire control system. It is also a modern method to make a 2-way switching connection as it is a little different from the two-wire control method.

2-way Switch Wiring using Three-wire

According to the Circuit Diagram of the 2-way switch circuit above, the common of switch1 and switch2 are connected with each other. PIN-1 of both the switches are connected with the phase and PIN2 of both the switches are connected with pin2 and the lamp is connected in series.

Applications of Two-way Switching:

  • Used mostly in the staircase.
  • Circuits protection equipment.
  • In a big building that has two entry and exit gates.
  • Used to control AC appliances such as fans, fan.
  • Common water pump of multiple stories of a building.
